This image haunted me. I was fascinated by the decay and a sense of utter abandonment. I took this picture less than a mile from JMU campus, listening to my tape-playing Sony Walkman (c. 1983), ignoring the stares of people wondering why I was shooting garbage.

Yes. We had to shoot 36 pictures every assignment (or something) and I tried to get a HUGE variety. I'm sure they've cleaned that alley up and modernized it by now. Downtown used to be a RICH resource for odd photos.

From what I remember parts of it are still pretty run-down. They tried to clean it up a bit and do sort of a "Down Town C-ville" type thing, but there's really only one street that is cleaned up nicely. I don't know if you've seen any of Cierra Drummond's work (she went to Fluvi too) but she took pictures down there too while she was at JMU...I'm not sure if she's got a dev art page, but she's got some of her pics on myspace.

I taught Cierra Drummond, she's a great art student. Yeah, I'd love to see her work. I wasn't really attached to my college days but I thought JMU was a good school and I liked the town. I would love to see her work. Let me know if you know of a way that I can get in touch with her!

Cierra's name online is iriscierra- I'm sure you can IM her or look her up on myspace under that name and I THINK she has some of her work on her myspace page...or she could always send it to you over aim :)
